Perhaps they also connected a wah-volume pedal to the Transformer to get that VROOM, VROOM sound as well. Humor, intended. Who knows? Perhaps the owner had put some of those oval car speakers in for additional highs! A friend and I, the friend really, tried out a Marshall bottom cabinet, he already had the top. We opened it up, took measurements and made a copy 'bottom' for him. He was a great guitarist, but his family was dirt poor, that was just reality. I doubt he was the only one ever to do this, either. I just helped him. Later he gave me the cabinet when he moved to Boca! Go figure! lol! The proof of the pudding is in the hearing. There may be something else happening here. I suspect this is a valve (tube) amp. I have one very similar. The valves themselves don't give out any sound (only very little), but there could be some interesting interaction between the characteristics of the microphone used and the accoustic properties of the front grille material. Also, depending on where the amp was placed, there could also be some augmentation from accoustic reflections from walls and nearby objects.
